November 2003

Domino is a fabulous dog... very smart and very eager to please.  We've had no "accidents" in the house and only lost one paper back book!   He has so many toys (presents from "Grandma and Grandpa") that we just about can't walk without a squeek being released from some object.  Unfortunately, most of these toys no longer have ears, eyes or noses.   He's managed to remove faces!  His favorite toy, however, remains to be a tennis ball sewn onto a rope.  He flings it around and knocks himself silly - creates great exercise for him.

They say it takes 21 days to form a habit and he's all about 21 days!  After just 3 weeks with us, he's walking very well on his leash, obeys our commands (for the most part) and has gotten into a great schedule with us.  He gets two walks a day (morning and evening) and enjoys them very much.   Mornings are a favorite time for him.  After he eats and has his walk, he gets to go "wake up" daddy!  Waking up daddy involves pouncing onto the bed and giving many, many "kisses"

He'll be going for his first "peticure" and grooming next Tuesday so he can be handsome when his "Auntie Amy" (my sister) comes to town for a visit.

He's a true joy to have and has created much joy and laughter in our house already!

Kelsey came to our home out of the San Antonio Animal Shelter on the Memorial Day weekend as a GRR foster dog. When she arrived she weighed only 33 pounds, had a bad cough, a drippy nose and watering eyes. As a one year old female Golden she was small in stature and very underweight; her ribs prominently showing. It also appears she had already had a litter of puppies. It was apparent, from her weight and the habit of hiding food that she was not getting fed very much before she was rescued. Despite her beginnings, she was loving and friendly to us and our own Golden, Webster, Our cat? now that's another story.

The first week we spent convincing her that she could trust us. We fed her separately and slowly worked her through her eating problems. Our male golden played the big brother role perfectly. He showed her the ropes around here and gave her the place of honor under the dinner table during our evening meal. By the end of the second week we saw her Golden personality coming out and her physical condition improving. She now weighed in at 38 pounds, a gain of five pounds!!!

We all voted to adopt Kelsey except the cat, who every time she tried to vote was sent back to think about it some more. There was more training for Kelsey on proper behavior towards cats. Kelsey no longer chases her. We asked GRR if we could adopt Kelsey and be her forever home.

Soon after adoption, Kelsey looked at us one night and seemed to say “OK, so who is in charge here? Is it Me? Is it Me?” We said "it is time for some formal training.” So we were off to Triple Crown Dog Academy for basic obedience training. Turns out Kelsey is a quick learner. She has learned Sit, Down, Come, Place and to walk with us on a leash. Shortly after Labor Day she had another weigh check at the vet clinic weighting in at 45 pounds and pronounced to be in excellent condition.

From a shelter waif to a welcomed family member, a true Cinderella story.
