Indya

Indya, age 10

Updated 7/24/11

Indya was checking the website yesterday and could not believe her beautiful brown eyes! “First, that picture makes me look old! Could we  change it out for a new one, say, a snap of me in my party hat? And second—am I really right that the only “story” there dates from right after I came to GRR SEVEN MONTHS ago?!? Please, get with it and tell everyone about how great I am doing NOW. Honestly!”

Oops! When a dog is right, well, she’s right. So here’s the scoop on Miss Indya today…

Relaxed, calm, friendly, sweet, happy, polite, wonderful gal! Nary an accident, never requires a crate, has free roam of the house at all times.  Great with other dogs of all ages. She is everyone's friend… she never even gets annoyed at the young rowdy dogs! We haven’t observed her with cats, but she’d probably be great.

A social girl, she is  excellent in the car and loves the short Nightly Dog Drive, as well as the much longer drive from South Austin to Round Rock every other week to see Francis the Healer (more on that in a minute).

Indya adores her food and eats in the kitchen with the other dogs -- no problem.  In keeping with her well-rounded personality, her appetite is wide-ranging! She even loves blueberries, oranges & other fruits.  She zips right over for a bite if she spots me preparing fruit.

Indya knows the importance of looking good at all times! She is an excellent little bath taker. She loves to be brushed & is still & good during nail trims.  Once, she fell asleep while I trimmed her feet & did her nails -- I wish everyone was this good!

Because she is elderly & has lost facial fat, Indya’s eyelashes tend to rub at her eyes a bit, causing some irritation, so we apply artificial tears to keep her comfy. Her ears require regular maintenance, too—doubtless the legacy of a lifetime of neglected ear infections. (She is hard of hearing, so we get her attention by catching her eye.) Every evening when it's time for her ear & eye drops, she sits on a rug in the kitchen.  She lifts her ears for the ear drops (very cute!) and sits still for the eyedrops.  She gets a bite of salami or cheese when we finish.  She looks forward to the routine because she knows she'll get a yummy treat.

Now about her healing sessions… since her foster brother Magnum sees Francis the Healer to help with his anxiety, Indya has been going too. The only time I've ever seen Indya shake hands, is with Francis.  You should have seen her offering her paw to him!  She did it during the entire session.  She loves Francis! Her ear infections weren’t responding to the usual meds, so we’ve been trying a product he recommended, called Zymox Enzymatic Ear Solution. It’s been about six weeks now and her ears are definitely improved. Yay!

To sum it all up: No worries. Indya is a great gal with a super-cute personality who would do beautifully in many types of households!

Indya’s owners just couldn’t care for her, and hadn’t been able to for some time. When Pat visited her at the shelter, she was pretty worried about the state the old dog was in—“Worst mats I have EVER seen; I must have cut off 2 pounds of them,” she said. And then there were the bad ears, the crusty eyes, the dragon-lady toenails, the all-over filthiness. Once out of the shelter and cleaned up, though, the 10-year-old looked a thousand percent better: she proved to be a petite redhead with an adorable “cotton puff” face, a trim figure, and a busy, social nature. An apparent stroke a few days into care shook us all up—but amazingly, within a week, Indya had bounced right back. “Bustling up for meals, smiling, socializing with everyone, happy & interested, eager for her car rides—incredible!”
