“Oh, about a hundred and five.” That’s what our volunteer said when we asked how old she thought Ray was! She’d zipped out to the shelter in response to an urgent plea: “We have a very sweet ,old Golden ret. I was wondering if you could help us get him out of here & into a foster home. Here is his pic, he was brought in as a stray. If you can help please let us know right away because we are very full.”
Ray DID look pretty old – teeth worn down from chewing (likely on his fur – he was covered with fleas), gunky eyes, thickened ears, black bare patches of skin. “Probably lived in someone’s backyard all his life, doubt he has EVER had a bath.” For all his scruffy looks, though, the friendly fella popped right up to his feet when he saw a visitor: “Hi! Pleased to meet you! Let’s go for a walk!” Hmm, his joints seem A-OK. Maybe he’s not all that old after all…
And he isn’t! Vet puts him at about age 7. He’s heartworm negative (incredible!), and all he needs is a course of meds for his infected ears and eyes, and regular medicated shampoos to combat the skin issues – which are due to fleabite allergy and subsequent infection.
At his foster home, he’s fitting right in. Within thirty minutes of arriving, he’d greeted the other two dogs, made friends, and settled down for a much-need nap. We can’t wait to see how he looks a few months from now!
