Lucee

Age: 6

Updated 3/5/11

Time to update you on the living I’ve been doing these past few weeks.  I’m a testament to the philosophy that eating well and exercise will indeed keep a lady young—or even make her younger! You should see me now: my coat is shiny, I’ve got a runway model’s physique, and I walk about 6 miles every day and love every minute.   The dog friends who walk with me are younger, but I keep up with all of them—no problem!

I find great joy in just lying at the backdoor watching the birds and squirrels.  If you’re expecting a squirrel-chasing dog, that’s not me.  When my foster mom opens the door to let me out, I run off the patio then stand and watch them scatter.  I’m not what you’d call highly driven to get to them.  I just like the show.  Same with the rabbit that lives with us: I like to stand by his cage and watch him, and when he’s outside playing, I lounge at the backdoor mesmerized by his antics, but I don’t get all manic like some dogs would when he bounces across the yard.

My foster dad still takes me to work with him most days. I LOVE to ride in the car, and I’m the best dog ever when it comes to meeting new people. I’m not a gregarious greeter. I’ll wag my tail and say hello, but I’m not one of those “bounce up, around, and all over you” dogs.  I’m a regal lady.

Sometimes I get to stay home all day without a human.  I’m a sophisticated lady who likes her house nice and tidy, so I make sure it stays just like my foster parents left it.  They’re impressed with me.

Like grand ladies, I do have my quirks.  I can be both hard-headed and a lover.   I’ve learned that giving my foster mom and dad hugs is fun.  Being expressive is new for me, but I would never think of hugging a stranger... absolutely not!   Patience isn’t one of my virtues.  When I decide it’s time to go home from the office, I’ll flip the door handle with my nose to let my foster dad know to hurry along.  And little dogs aren’t my favorite if they are nippy.  Guess that’s the mother in me who believes little dogs need to understand boundaries.

I’m looking for a home who wants a companion dog.  If you work, that’s fine with me.  I’ll wait for you to come home as long as you’ll take me for walks and integrate me into your life.  I’d love to explore new places with you.  The best part is I’m well-mannered in public places.

That’s it for now.  Call me if you’d like to know more

It’s me, Lucee.  You’ve probably noticed I’ve been missing from the web.  Well, I had to be treated for heartworms, have that girl surgery, and then didn’t feel too well after it was all done.  So GRR took me off the web until I felt better and could tell you all about myself.  I’m now happy to oblige.

People are guessing that I’m probably between 5 and 7 instead of 4 as was originally reported.  Since I can’t tell them, let’s not focus on age, please.  Mae West said it best: “You’re never too old to become younger!” And that’s exactly what I’m doing now that I’m feeling so good.

Let me cut right to the chase and tell you what I’m looking for in a new home:

* Opportunities for lots of fun and some adventure.  I plan on getting younger and to do that, I want someone who will include me in their lives as much as they can.  I go to work with my foster dad every day, and I LOVE to ride in the car.  My foster mom and dad have taken me on several outings to new places, and I love the great outdoors and new experiences.  I’ve got a new sparkle in my eye for learning things, too.

* Someone who will walk me everyday (at least once) and feed me healthful food.  Being contained during those weeks of heartworm treatment added a few pounds to my statuesque frame.  I’m proud to say that my figure is getting “ooh la la” curvy again (Mae would be proud).  I arrived at my new foster home weighing 96 pounds (don’t shriek! I’m a tall leggy redhead), but I’m down to 88 pounds, and I want to keep these girlish curves I’ve discovered.

* My own doggie bed tucked in the corner of my new owners’ bedroom.  I sleep like a rock at night, curled up on my soft bed, so I want my own spot to lay my head.
* A companion.  I’m the perfect companion dog because I like to lie next to you while you watch TV or read.  Don’t worry about me pestering you while you’re busy around the house.  If you’re busy, I’m perfectly content to hang out and do my own thing …like watching squirrels out the backdoor.  I just love watching the antics of those pesky rodents, and I watch without making a sound.

To quote Mae one more time, “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”  I’m ready to get on with my new life and live it rightJ, but I need someone who will help me achieve that goal.

Lucee in the sky with diamonds!  See… I’m so wonderful that the Beatles wrote a song about me! Well, actually they wrote the song many years  before I was born, but it MIGHT have been written about me, because I’m definitely a precious girl.

I’ve had a pretty rough time for the last few months.  First, I got those little worms in my heart which could have killed me if GRR hadn’t saved me.  Then I was put in a shelter, which could have killed me if GRR hadn’t saved me.  And then I got pneumonia, which…. You know the story.  I’m just glad that GRR was around to save me.

Now I’m in a really great home where they feed me twice a day.  I think they’re trying to spoil me with this Blue Buffalo White Fish food which is unbelievably good.  I have my own area of the house which I have to stay in during my heartworm treatment.  They don’t want me moving too much until all those bad worms are gone.

I’m a big girl, but I’m really easy because I’m so calm.  As a matter of fact, if I had a middle name it would be Calm.  I don’t jump… that would be silly.  Thunderstorms don’t bother me one bit.  I’m calm in the car, calm in the house, and calm in my bed.

I can’t wait until this heartworm treatment is over.  It shouldn’t be too much longer now.  I’d really like to hang out with some other dogs and maybe even play with them.  I’m only about 4 years old, so I have lots of time to play, learn new things, and bond with a new family.

Speaking of a new family, I’d love to have my own people; big ones, little ones, all different shapes and sizes.  I’ve got 90 pounds of love ready to give.  If you want to get on my good side, all you have to do is pet me and rub my ears.  I LOVE to have my ears rubbed!  In return, I’ll give you years of affection, loyalty, fun, and enjoyment.  We could go walking, swimming, play ball, and all sorts of things.  Or we could lie around like potatoes on the couch and watch a movie together.  Either way, I’ll be a happy girl… and you don’t even have to buy me diamonds (or Blue Buffalo White Fish).

Update: 9/17/10

Not too young, not too old; good temperament; darling face; lovely fur… but as soon as people found out that shelter gal Lucee had heartworms, it was “thanks but no thanks.” Her hold time expired… but the shelter staff was determined to find a way out. “We just don't have it in us to put her down, because she is so sweet & well-behaved.  Can GRR find a place for her? we would really appreciate it.”

The sturdy redhead arrived at the clinic the very next day—just in the nick of time, because she’d started to cough a lot and turned out to have pneumonia, of all things! Antibiotics are making pretty Lucee feel much better. Once she gets over this hurdle, we’ll get her HW treatment underway. Stay tuned!
