Jackpot
At a local shelter to check out a few other dogs, a volunteer for another rescue group spotted a big gold dog in a back room. Seems he was on hold for an adoptive family, but 3 days past the pick-up date, they still hadn’t shown. She called our Hotline: “I am pretty sure he’s purebred… lighter gold, has a big block head.” A GRR volunteer headed out right away—one look at him, and it was “Wow! we hit the jackpot with this one.”
At his foster home, he’s recovering from kennel cough… and learning just to relax and be a pup:
At any sudden movements or loud noises, he drops flat on the floor. And for some reason he’s afraid of lying on his side when somebody’s down on the floor with him. We’ll work on that. But this guy is just a dream on a lead, he’s calm & quiet, and he’s apparently house-trained, although we’re not taking any chances at present! Since he’s on exercise restrictions post-neuter, we’re walking him 3 times a day for “outside breaks,” and he's in his crate for some time each day. (I'm using pepperoni enticement to improve his outlook on the crate… not his favorite place to be.)
Jackpot will take a rawhide chip, but doesn't chew much (yet). He’s good with our Golden Sonia—no squabbles over toys. He's great with the cats, mostly ignores them. He surprised Spooky accidentally yesterday and got a solid tap on the snout for it (no claws), and he was appropriately contrite and apologetic. Spooky didn't show any signs of fright or anger, just sat and grudgingly took the apology (as only cats can do).
It was funny giving Jackpot the his anti-worm Drontal. Naturally, it's a big horse-choker pill, so I broke it. We tried it in hot dog bites, but he separated the pill pieces out cleanly. Clever dog. Next up, Velveeta. He thought that was great, and he never noticed the pill pieces! Job done.
Jackpot’s a bit skinny at 68 pounds, but once he fills out, you can tell he’ll be beautiful. We’re looking forward to his full personality coming out...
